Sparkling Rain: Lesbian fiction from Japan
Presenter: Barbara Summerhawk
Peruse lesbian fiction from Japan with the editor of the forthcoming Sparkling Rain: Fiction of women who love women from Japan. When did “lesbian” fiction begin? Who are some of the historical foremoms? What’s lesbian fiction like today? Got any questions?
With a grant from Daito Bunka University, Barbara Summerhawk put together a collection with introductory essays on lesbian movements and literary histories, tentatively scheduled to be published by New Victoria Press in Fall, 2007.

Foreign Women's Reactions to Japanese Language Interactions
Presenter: Joanna Hosoya
How much do we “Japanize”? How much is gender an issue in speech? Let's consider other women's response to pragmatic aspects of the Japanese language and compare their responses to one's own.
Joanna Hosoya came from a monolingual background, but has been married to a Japanese man and raising children in Japanese communities for the last 15 years. Whilst living here, she found aspects of gender and even personality can be performed differently in her two languages leading her to wrestle with the notion of essential identity. She became interested in how other women resolve finding themselves framed by Japanese interactions in ways that are incompatible with their first culture values. Besides doing some research in that area and teaching, her current interests include karate and tai chi, which are both basically non-verbal forms of expression.'

　　ジョアンナ・ホソヤさんは一言語を話す経歴の持ち主ですが、日本人男性と結婚し15年間日本の地域社会で子育てをしている。日本にいる間、ジェンダー の側面や人格さえもが二ヵ国語間で異なって演じられる事に気付き、本質的なアイデンティティの観念に取り組むに至った。ジョアンナさんは自分の本来の文化 の価値観と相反する日本語の相互対話によって自分達が枠にはめられる様相をどの様に解決するのかに興味を持った。この領域の研究や指導の他に、現在は基本 的に言語を必要としない空手、太極拳に関心を持つ。

I can write my name: Women's Literacy Education in Nepal
Presenter: Naoko Ishii
Naoko Ishii will discuss her experience as a volunteer in rural Nepal, where she worked on empowering women through adult literacy education. In this presentation she will talk about gender in Nepal, the influence of Hindu culture on reproductive health, and adult literacy education. Participants will receive a demonstration lesson on how to teach and learn Nepalese.
Naoko Ishii participated in the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer program (JOCV) of The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from 2000-2003. She currently works for JICA as a member of its gender team.

石井菜穂子さんはJICA青年海外協力隊員（JOCV）としてネパール中西部の農村での経験を基に、成人識字教室を通した女性のエンパワーメントの取り組 みを発表します。ネパールでのジェンダー状況、リプロダクティブヘルス（性や生殖に関する健康）へのヒンドゥー文化・ジェンダー要因の影響、および女性の エンパワーメントの為の成人識字教育について話します。参加者はネパール語での識字教育も体験できます。
　　石井さんは現在国際協力機構（JICA）ジェンダー平等推進チームに所属、ネパールではJICAのJOCVとして2000年から2003年にわたって 活動。

This technique can help you become more aware of your own truth, as you begin to see your situation from a new perspective. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem."

Presenter: Terri MacMillan
Terri MacMillan will present "Balancing Act: Mind, Spirit, Body in a
Changing World." She will talk about the importance of mind, spirit, and
body as it relates to her own experiences. She will also speak on issues of
critical thinking, awareness, self-reflection, and stillness and compassion.
Terri is currently the Creative Director of a multimedia studio in Tokyo. She
previously worked for ten years as Manager of Business Affairs at CBS
Records, and was Director of Administration for two years at Prince's
Paisley Park Music. In addition to her professional career, she is active in
politics, and is currently the Chair of Democrats Abroad-Japan. She is the
author of "Bush in Wonderland," published in 2003.

Journalistic Feature Writing: Bridge Between Culture and Rhetoric
Presenter: Robin Antepara
In this workshop the presenter will show how interview-based feature writing can provide a bridge between elementary and thesis writing in university writing classes.
Robin Antepara teaches journalism at Tsuda College. She has worked as a journalist in the United States and Japan. She has an M.A. in applied linguistics and recently completed course work for a Ph.D. in depth psychology.

Refresh and Revitalize with Rhythm
Presenter: Kobayashi Mayumi
Feel how much fun dance can be in this workshop, which will begin with a stretching exercise followed by movements to improve blood circulation, body warmth and balance. Next, participants will practice dance steps to music and then combine them, dancing in groups. The session will also include how to use breathing to relax muscles. Bring one large bath towel and a smaller one. Dance or other thin-soled shoes or cotton socks are also recommended.
Mayumi Kobayashi started classical ballet at the age of 5. After that, she learned jazz, modern and other dances. At present she is doing research on dances that elderly people can do. She gives ballet and jazz dance lessons in Tokyo and Saitama.

　　小林さんは5歳からクラシックバレエを始め、その後ジャズ・モダンなど幅広く研修.
現在は年齢を重ねても踊れる中身から作り上げていく踊りを研究中。東京、埼玉県でもバレエ・ジャズダンスを指導。

Presenter: Jane Joritz-Nakagawa
In this workshop participants will read and/or listen to literary pieces containing the themes poetry, gender and/or war. After, they will discuss these pieces. Most works will be in English, but there will be Japanese language pieces also for those who prefer reading/discussing in Japanese.
Jane Joritz-Nakagawa has well over 100 publications, most of these poems in international literary journals. A book-length poetry collection titled Skin Museum was published in 2006; another poetry book will appear in summer, 2007.

　　　ジェーン・ジョリツ—ナカガワさんは100冊以上の出版物を発行しており、大半の詩は国際文学ジャーナルに掲載されています。『Skin Museum』と名づけられた一冊の本に相当する長さの詩集は2006年出版。また2007年夏にはもう一冊の詩集が出版予定。

The Role of Social Workers in Japan Today
Presenter: Sonoko Sakai
Social workers in Japan must face the challenge of a declining birth rate and an aging population. In this presentation Sonoko Sakai will tell us what she has been involved in so far and will also show slides of her study tour of Northern Europe. She will discuss the tasks that social workers should carry out under existing social conditions.
Sonoko Sakai started her career as a social worker at a nursing home in 1985. After visiting Northern Europe in 1990, she returned to Japan and started working at the Homecare Support Center as a social worker. At present, she teaches social welfare at two universities: Takasaki Keizai and Waseda. In 2005, with other experts, she set up an NPO which offers seminars and works on consultation and home care. She has written several books related to aging and care for the elderly.

日本のソーシャルワーカーは少子高齢化の課題に直面しています。堺さんはこれまでに係わってきた活動と、1990年の北欧視察の様子をスライドで説明しま す。現代社会の中でのソーシャルワーカーとしての課題を話します。
堺さんは1985年に特別老人ホームのソーシャルワーカーとして仕事を始める。北欧視察後は在宅介護支援センターに勤務。現在は高崎経済大学や早稲田大学 などで社会福祉を講義。2005年介護分野、子育て分野の専門家と共にNPO法人（ささえあう21世紀の会）を設立、セミナー開催、総合相談、在宅サービ スに取り組んでいる。高齢化・介護に関する著書も多い。
